Anybody heading up to LV canyon may want to reconsider. I was heading up tomorrow, but just found out that the Powerhouse road is not plowed. mono County, which plows the road, apparently doesn't give it a high priority.

Steve, there are two issues:

1) avy hazard

2) county snowplow is BROKEN...YES, BROKEN

B-R-O-K-E -- BROKE!

supposedly, those relying on ice climbers for business are working with the county towards some kind of resolution.  You are also correct on the lower priority when compared to communities that are still being dug out.

I would suggest doing some backcountry.  It's seriously one big playground.  Just play it safe on avy terrain.  There were some slabs above treeline in June Lake at the waterfall above the powerplant. Some had already released; some had not.

This from Doug's site

Welcome to the Ice Report

January 18

WE NEED YOUR HELP !!! PLEASE CALL MONO COUNTRY PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR, EVAN NIEKIRK AT 760-932-5440 AND EXPRESS YOUR CONCERN OVER ACCESS TO LEE VINING CANYON. PLEASE LET HIM KNOW THAT YOU COME TO MONO COUNTY TO CLIMB ICE IN LEE VINING CANYON, STAY IN MOTELS IN THE AREA, EAT IN LOCAL RESTAURANTS, ETC. PLEASE BE COURTEOUS AS YOU EXPRESS YOUR CONCERNS OVER ACCESS.

As everyone is aware, we have recently experienced the biggest storm in quite some time. Access to Lee Vining Canyon is presently very difficult. We have been speaking with mono County officials (mono County plows the road) this AM and they have said they may not be able to plow the road for quite some time.

I just got this off of Doug's website:

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to call mono County re: access to Lee Vining Canyon. The road is plowed, one lane, still a bit rough driving condtions, but with 4WD and/or chains you'll be able to get to the Poole Plant. Many thanks to Marshall and the Lee Vining Road Crew.

Anyone up for some ice?
