Zion National Park is a BREATHTAKING camping destination!!
SIGN-UPS:
Please read this entire e-mail before signing up. Then sign up for the waiting list and e-mail me your regular e-mail address. If you are bringing someone, let me know who they are. I will e-mail you a PayPal payment request for $15 per person, and after you pay I will move your name to attending.
CAMPGROUND
This is an established campground with bathrooms, fire rings and picnic tables. NO SHOWERS, so bring portable camp showers with you. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 8 am. Our group campsite will hold up to 15 people and approximately 8 tents.
As of right now, they are having a fire ban, so campfires are NOT allowed. This will most likely continue through the summer, but you can get updates on Watchman Campground's website at recreation.gov. If you have a lantern, please bring it. The more lanterns we have, the better.
VEHICLES: We have spots for 4 vehicles at the campsite. They will be given on a “first-pay first-served” basis. All additional vehicles must be parked in an overflow parking lot. Park information told me that the overflow lot is a bit of a walk from the campsite.
THE TOWN
The town of Springdale has lots of nice restaurants and shops, so if we get tired of camp food, we can go out to eat there. There is also a grocery store in case you forget something. A free shuttle bus runs through the main street of the town. Another shuttle bus runs up and down the main drive of the park, stopping at all the trailheads.
AGENDA
Day 1 (Saturday, Aug 11)
Travel day. Drive time from San Diego is approximately 8 hours. We arrive at Watchman Campground in the early evening and set up camp at our group campsite. We make dinner and get acquainted.
Days 2 to 4
I want to hike The Narrows and The East Rim trails at a leasurely pace. Check out pictures of The Narrows HERE. These are pretty much all-day hikes. I'm not an early riser, so I'm thinking about 10 am start time for hikes. On the third day I want to drive 2 hours over to Bryce Canyon for a day of hiking and possibly horseback riding there. If you don't want to go to Bryce, you can choose another activity/hike at Zion for that day.
Day 5 (Aug 15): Pack up and drive home.
COST
Camping: $15 per person will cover camp fees and firewood I will buy for the trip. Be sure you want to go before signing up. NO REFUNDS unless the trip is cancelled.
Park Entrance fee: $25 per vehicle. This includes access to all the trails and in/out privileges for 7 days.
The Narrows rental gear (water shoes and hiking stick): $19 per person. Rental equipment is highly recommended to avoid slipping on river rocks, getting rocks in your sandals as you hike and breaking your own hiking poles.
FOOD
Plan on potluck dinners. Bring your own food for breakfast and lunch. We will decide who brings what for the potluck closer to the trip.
More details on what to bring, directions, etc, will be e-mailed to attendees closer to the trip date.
PLEASE NOTE: Please limit alcohol to a couple of drinks each night. This is not a trip to drink and party at the campsite. It is expected that your language, jokes and general conduct are respectful to others.
