Event Description

The folks that ride shotgun on local statistics say this is one of the driest seasons on record in the LA area. We plan to observe the evidence firsthand with a stroll up Fish Canyon, possessed of a pastoral charm. The path up the canyon has a number of stream crossings. Depending on the fickleness of the weather gods, your tootsies may well get wet … but then again maybe not. The roundtrip distance will be around 9 miles, more or less given how far up the canyon we may go, with a vertical gain of 1000 feet. Note: this IS NOT the Fish Canyon near Duarte!

Meet 9:30am in Sylmar (at the northern end of the San Fernando Valley, north of where the 405 freeway merges into the 5 freeway) to carpool to the trailhead. Take the Roxford St exit off the 5 freeway. Turn right on Roxford and right on Encinitas Ave if coming from the south, and turn left on Roxford and right on Encinitas Ave if coming from the north. There is a McDonalds at this corner with a wall in front of the parking lot where we will meet.    For those comfortable with GPS systems, these are the carpool coordinates: 34.303398,-118.478238.  You can also specify "12860 Encinitas Ave Los Angeles, CA 91342" within Google Maps. After meeting here we will carpool north up the 5 freeway and exit at the Templin Highway offramp.   Bring minimum 1 quart / liter liquid, 2 quarts / liters better yet, and lunch (as you wish).  The hike is also co-listed with the Sierra Club.
