Trip Report
|
Big Sur, beautiful weather, beautiful music and great company make for a great camping trip. This year's event was attended by Skip, Sonya, William, Rose Ann, Tim, Kim, Evelyn, Le, Anne, Ruth, Theresa and Janet. Unfortunately, the flu bug bit Emily & Tiffani, (Jeroen stayed behind to care for Tiffani). Elize was overtaken by events in San Diego. We had two campsites by the Big Sur "river" and one not too far away. There was live music for a small fee at the tavern (unless you were with stealthy Ruth and knew the back door entrance) and acoustic music down in the campground led by Kate Wallace and others that attend the yearly Kerrville Folk Music Festival in Texas. They made us feel welcome when we were there. Late Friday night the first contingent of hot tubbers visited the Esalen Institute for a late night soak. The tubs directly overlook the Pacific, a mere 40 feet or so below. The combination of waves crashing, stars blazing and medicinal sulphur springs combined for a magical end to the day.
Saturday everyone visited Pt. Lobos State Reserve, although not all together. After that, most visited the Hog's Breath Inn; once owned by actor and former Carmel mayor Clint Eastwood for a late afternoon snack. Early Saturday evening, a gourmet meal was enjoyed by all, including baby back ribs, the ever-present turkey burgers, fish, salads, hummus, beans, veggies, fudge cookies and brownies. A little more acoustic music and the second group was off to the hot springs. Again, the weather was perfect and the night just as magical as the night before, with clear skies, shooting stars and great company.
Sunday we parted ways, with some continuing on to Santa Cruz and the rest taking their time cruising back to the urban life - with stops along the way to enjoy waterfalls, more spectacular scenery and elephant seals, sea lions, sea otters, hawks and seagulls in abundance.

| Event Description |
I have booked three (3) campsites at the Fernwood Resort in Big Sur (2 by the river and one closer to and behind the shower area). The campground is private and they have a restaurant, small store, and live music on the weekends. It is a good time. Of course this is Big Sur, so there are plenty of other things to do as well. Last year we had the good fortune to run into a group of professional musicians who congregate here every year right before the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas to sit around the campfire and jam. Perhaps our good fortune will present itself again. Each site holds 6 campers. I am not asking for any money unless you show up. I am requesting $10 per camper per night ($5 per additional vehicle per night). Carpooling is encouraged! See the website for more (some) details:
http://www.fernwoodbigsur.com/
I will make sure that all 18 spaces are filled with campers who are serious about attending by contacting active list members in April to confirm their status. Please feel free to sign up for the waiting list. The web site for this year’s Kerrville Festival is:

I will be making reservations at Esalen Institute (roughly 12 miles south of Fernwood) for Saturday night. “Our hot springs are open to the public for late night bathing from 1am to 3am. The cost is $20, payable by credit card only. The number to phone for a reservation is 831-667-3047. Reservations must be made before arriving. The reservation line is open between 8am and 7:45pm daily.†They are cleaned daily and overlook the Pacific Ocean.
