Trip Report
This was truly a hike to remember; no other trail delivers so much beautiful scenery for so long. The weather was perfect on the hike day, cool above and hot enough to swim in the chilly river. We were lucky enough to see elk, condor, and deer. The squirrels and ravens were lucky to see us (and our food). I learned a few things about coordinating a hike - hopefully I won't make those mistakes again, ha. Everybody pitched in to make hanging around camp and the fire a fun, with good food and drinks. We witnessed the birth - and consumption - of the first Smoreo. Thanks to all of you who made it. You're a hardcore bunch, and it was great to meet those I hadn't hiked with before.
Event Information
Event Name Grand Canyon South Rim to River 17 mile loop
Event Date/Time 10/19/2007 N/A to 10/21/2007 N/A
Location in Los Angeles, CA
Event Type Backpacking, Hiking, Camping
Event Description A car camping trip and long day hike into the heart of the Grand Canyon. The scenery is amazing, such that it's been called one of the greatest wonders of the natural world.

The Hike. We'll descend the South Kaibab Trail to the Colorado River near Phantom Ranch, then return by Bright Angel Trail. The total distance is over 16 miles, with close to 5,000 feet of climb on the return. October is a milder season there, but we still could have very hot or cold weather.

Requirements. To sign up for the hike, you should be in good condition, and have experience day hiking comparable distances and elevation gain at a moderate pace. For example, if you'd be comfortable hiking Half Dome or San Gorgonio Mountain on a hot summer day, you'll be fine here. You should do your homework, and come prepared to hike out on your own, in case of emergency - I'll supply maps, trail descriptions and more information as the date gets nearer. We'll keep a moderate pace, but enjoy the scenery.

Schedule.

Friday: I (or another earlybird) will get there and check in to our campsite in the day time. Arrive when your schedule allows - we'll set up car pools if possible. We can meet and socialize, and hopefully get a good night's sleep.

Saturday: We'll wake early for the hike, and ride a shuttle from the campground to the trailhead. Lunch and cool-down at the Colorado River. Afterward we can celebrate with dinner and drinks back at camp.

Sunday: Sleep in and drive home, maybe do a bonus hike if there's interest. The campground and village area have many interpretive exhibits if you'd like to learn more about the canyon and its history.

Camping Arrangements. Update July 20 I've booked a group camp since I have some other friends (both hikers and non-hikers) coming too. We're at Mather Campground, a short walk from the village - we won't exactly be roughing it. The group site is limited to 3 vehicles, but there should be lots of overflow parking nearby.

Cost. Update July 20 The group site at Mather is $100 for two nights, and I've already paid for it out of pocket. Instead of having to be an accountant, I just ask that you either chip in a fair portion at the campground, or buy something to share with the group - firewood, snacks, meals, drinks, your choice.Alternately, you can reserve your own site at Mather. Feel free to do this, and still go on Saturday's hike. Also keep in mind there's an entrance fee of $25 per vehicle to enter Grand Canyon National Park - you'll be on your own to pay this. Carpoolers should of course arrange a fair division of gas costs and the entrance fee.
