Trip Report
Well what can I say! The weather was great and the group was full of excitement. 25 showed up for the trek up the Old Mt. Wilson Trail. We enjoyed a short break at Orchard Camp and the shade of the canyon trees. Once on top the city was still somewhat covered with smaze. All the early morning fog was burning off but the view was limited to about 10 miles. The downtown buildings stuck out above the clouds as did the buildings in Century City. Well over half of the group made the summit and enjoyed a relaxing lunch and conversation. I really enjoyed seeing some familiar faces from the Wednesday Night hiking group as well as those that have been regulars on most of the trail maintenace and past hikes. To those that joined us for the first time, welcome. I hope we see you again. The hike was definitly a full day. The last of us got back to the cars @ 4:00pm. A little bit dirty but happy from another great day in the forest. Thank you to each and everyone of you who joined and making the day special for everyone.
Event Information
Event Name Old Mt. Wilson Trail - Sierra Madre to Mt. Wilson
Event Date/Time 2/11/2006 from N/A to N/A
Location in SIERRA MADRE, CA
Event Type Backpacking, Hiking, Camping
Event Description This original trail up Mt. Wilson - forged by Benjamin Wilson in 1864 - has, over the years, been one of the premier attraction in the range. No trail in the range had a richer heritage. During the Great Hiking Era (1895-1938), the dusty pathway vibrated under the tramp of boots and the pounding of hooves every fair-weather weekend.Every Saturday morning, hundreds would disembark from the red Pacific Electric trolley cars in Sierra Madre, knapsack slung o'er shoulder, and ramble up the crowded footpath to the mountaintop resorts.

Join us today as we follow the footsteps of those early trailblazers. The hike is 15 miles round trip and will gain 4500' in elevation. We will pass by the old resort of Orchard camp on our trek to Mt. Wilson. If you need to know what time we'll be back, then this hike is not for you. But, we should be back before it gets dark!!!

We will meet @ 7:30 am in Sierra Madre in front of Lizzie's Tavern. The old tavern is located on the corner of Mira Monte & Mt. Wilson Trail Drive. DO NOT park on Mt. Wilson Trail Drive. Park your cars on Mira Monte. From the 210 freeway in Arcadia exit @ Baldwin Ave and head north towards the mountains. Once you pass through the downtown area of Sierra Madre continue north on Baldwin Ave. to Mira Monte and turn right. From there it is about a 1/2 mile to Mt. Wilson Trail Dr.

Everyone should wear good hiking boots, bring a lunch and water. Dress accordingly depending on the weather. A hat, sunglasses and camera are nice to bring along. What you put in your pack is up to you. After all...you will be carrying it!!

If you have any questions, e-mail me.

See you on the Mountain!!
